‘The Challenge of Our Time’: Ex-Outside Editor Launches Investigative Site to Cover Public Land Threats
The media has undergone a radical transformation in recent years —and publications covering the outdoors are no exception. In 2023, the Disney-owned National Geographic fired all of its staff writers, leaving few, if any, full-time writers and editors for the longtime gold standard of outdoor journalism. Outside Magazine slowly grew into a conglomerate of outdoor publications, and then fired so...
Gold Standard in Packable Camp Chairs Gets an Upgrade: Helinox Chair One (re) Review
They say you shouldn’t reinvent the wheel — but what about the chair? Simple things ought to be simple, I thought to myself while breaking out the new Helinox Chair One (re) while camping recently. And chairs? Assuredly, we’ve got them down at this point. Apparently, I was wrong. Success is a process, and while the original Chair One set...
Why Moab Is Even Better Than You’ve Heard
Everyone who loves adventure must, at some point, make a pilgrimage to Moab, Utah. Just don’t be surprised if one trip turns into many. Cradled in a sprawling, three-dimensional garden of spiraling towers, sandstone arches, plunging canyons, and wind-polished slickrock, Moab is the hub of a 20 million-acre desert playground. The landscapes are otherworldly. The sunsets are second to none....
If You Think EVs Are Dead, Think Again
Lets examine the state of the electric vehicle (EV) industry, especially as it relates to the vehicles we drive on the road daily. There seems to be no new headline in the news these days that doesn’t hammer home the evolution of EVs. The federal tax credit is about to go down the drain, sales of EVs are definitely not...

With your mind between seasons, now is the perfect time to save big on outdoor gear and apparel. Youll find all kinds of amazing deals during Sun Ski...
The Best Hunting Socks of 2025
As a kid, I often wore two or three pairs of cotton socks topped with a super thick wool sock. It was a very inefficient system and did more harm than good. After many years, miles, and cold sits, I learned just how important good hunting socks are. Hunting socks may not be a glamorous gear item, but they sure...
How Not to Be a ‘Bad Tourist’ in the Outdoors
Few things inspire more clickworthy internet rage than stories about tourists who suffer consequences after doing “stupid” things. Every summer, someone else is getting gored by something with horns, tossed by something with antlers, rescued from trails they had no business hiking, or causing a domino effect of river rescues. Often, there’s a phone and a selfie somewhere in the...
Skip Yosemite: The Best Backpacking in California Isn’t in a National Park
California is a backpacker’s paradise, with stunning trails in national and state parks, and in the mountains, deserts, and along the ocean. Yet for all of this natural beauty, some of the state’s best backpacking actually lies in a little-known wilderness area near Fresno. Dinkey Lakes Trail guides hikers past a series of alpine lakes in a remote part of...
Running as Art, With Olympian and Filmmaker Alexi Pappas
Extreme adaptability and versatility can be found throughout the animal kingdom, but may have found their peak expression in Alexi Pappas. As a runner, Pappas was a two-time All-American for Dartmouth who set a national record running for Greece at the 2016 Olympics. As a performer, she was a member of Dartmouth’s gut-busting Dog Day improv group before going on...
