Camp for Free on Public Land and Beyond: ‘Dispersed Camping’ 101
A few years ago, I didn’t know what dispersed camping meant and had no idea there were places across the country where camping was utterly free. And I wasnt alone. According to the 2024 report from The Dyrt, 39% of the U.S. population doesnt know they can camp for free, and 40% know they can but have never tried it....
The Best Fire Pits of 2024
The ability to harness fire is one of humanity’s most significant accomplishments. And while a nice hole or a ring of rocks can provide an adequate setup for gathering around flaming embers, the best fire pits are preferable for both style and safety. While the basic premise of every firepit is the same, features vary from model to model to...

Where can you find stunning coastline, charming shoreline towns, and a variety of restaurants serving up dishes with locally sourced ingredients? All signs point to Michigan—the perfect destination for sustainable adventure. To learn all about why eco-minded travellers will love this Midwest state, we tapped Michigan local and sustainable travel enthusiast Emily Kay. Outside: What sets Michigan apart as a...
The Best Running Headphones of 2024
Buying the best running headphones can be a dice roll. Virtually all of us use them, but these techy tidbits come in all over the board. Depending on what you’re doing, they can miss the mark. The best running headphones provide strong field performance like fit and durability. Condition-specific factors — touch functionality, water resistance, and connectivity — could make...
What’s the difference between your abductors and adductors?
Your abductor and adductor muscles are in your hips and thighs, working in sync to enable you to move your legs sideways. Your abductor muscles are responsible for moving your leg away from your body’s midline, while the adductors are responsible for moving the leg back towards your body’s midline. You’ve probably seen the abductor and adductor machines around your...
Best 360 Action Camera Yet: Insta360 X4 Spherical Review
I’m on the chairlift with my 6-year-old son at our local ski hill. He’s had a great ski season so far, but these years of skiing with him while he’s little are numbered. That’s why this has been a great opportunity to test the newest action video camera from Insta360, the X4, to document these precious moments. Also, it will...
The Outdoor Gear That Helped Me Crush Disney World
As an outdoorswoman and veteran of multi-day, multi-sport adventure races, long mountain runs, and hundreds of competitive events of all sorts, let me tell you: There is no difference between a successful adventure and mastering a Disney park. They both require research, planning, strategizing, rising before dawn, navigating smart routes, moving fast and light, competitiveness, problem-solving, outwitting competitors, on-the-go fueling,...
Matthew Modine Learned to Love Lycra for His New Film ‘Hard Miles’
You’re never too old to pick up a new outdoor sport. Just ask actor Matthew Modine. Modine, of Full Metal Jacket and Stranger Things fame, recently began road cycling in his mid-sixties. This was no accidental hobby: he started biking for his starring role in a new sports drama called Hard Miles, which is in theaters now. The film follows the...

Arctic Expeditions Ain’t What They Used to Be: Lonnie Dupre’s Gear Tell-All
Polar explorer Lonnie Dupre has spent the last four-and-a-half decades forging uncharted paths. In 2001, he and John Hoelscher completed the world’s first and only non-motorized circumnavigation of Greenland, covering 6,500 miles on dog sled and kayak. In 2022, Dupre returned to the country to film Amka, a documentary focused on his unique relationship with the Polar Inuit community that...
The New Public Lands Rule Balances Conservation Against Drilling
For more than a century, the Bureau of Land Management has prioritized the interests of miners, ranchers, and the oil and gas industries in management decisions on the 245 million acres acres of public land for which it’s responsible over conservation and recreation. No longer. Thanks to a new rule issued by the Biden administration, the agency must now balance...
The 9 Most Fun Adventure Lodges in North America
Base camp might be my favorite two words in the English language. Base camp is where you stage the next excursion, or refuel with a bowl of stew, or a beer. You rest and recover there. If you’re lucky, you can slip into a hot tub or cold spring, because base camps dont always have to be a tent or...
