Video: What Footwear Should You Wear at Mount Everest Base Camp?
Last month we sent reporter Ben Ayers to Mount Everest Base Camp. Ben brought a ton of outdoor gear with him to test: boots, sleeping bags, parkas, gloves, and other items that are built for the harshest alpine environment. In this video, Ben discusses the footwear that got him through the 11-day trek from Lukla to Base Camp, and also...
The First Corvette ‘Hypercar’: Introducing the 2026 ZR1X
When Chevrolet relaunched the Stingray back in 2020, it pushed into entirely new territory with a first-ever mid-engine version of “America’s sports car,” pouring out as much as 495 horsepower. Of course, anyone who’s followed the history of the ‘Vette over the decades is well aware that the bowtie brand routinely rolls out a series of ever more exotic machines....
Video: Smart Layering Kept Me Cozy at Mount Everest Base Camp
The trek to Mount Everest Base Camp is the ideal setting to test gear, due to the rugged terrain, tough living conditions, and massive fluctuations in temperature. In May, our reporter Ben Ayers completed the 11-day hike to Mount Everest Base Camp, before spending a month living at 17,500 feet. During his reporting mission, Ayers tested a wide range of...
The Most Remote Places to Stay on Earth That Are Worth the Trek
Profound silence on the tundra in sub-Arctic Canada, the gunshot of a calving glacier heard from a tent in Greenlands backcountry, the reflection of snow-crowned peaks in a mirrored lagoon in the high plateau of Bolivia. Some of my most awe-inspiring travel experiences have been in the vast wilderness, where I felt humbled by the scale of time and space...
Two Hikers Were Struck by Lightning on This Popular Colorado Fourteener. They Survived.
Search teams using a helicopter hoisted two hikers off the summit of a Colorado fourteener after a lightning strike badly injured one of them on Thursday June 12. Rescuers believe the medevac mission may be the highest-altitude helicopter evacuation in state history. In a Facebook post, Evergreen, Colorado’s Alpine Rescue Team wrote that it had received a message just before...
Trail Camera Helps Capture Suspect in Minnesota Political Assassination Manhunt
A trail camera image captured in rural Sibley County, Minn., helped bring an end to a massive manhunt for Vance Luther Boelter, the man accused of killing two prominent political figures and attempting to murder two others over the weekend. Authorities arrested Boelter, 57, on Monday morning after locating him in a field near his abandoned vehicle. The image from...
Lightning Strikes 14er Hikers — While on the Phone With Colorado SAR
The arrival of summer means more hikers seeking high-altitude summits —and more rescues when they get into trouble. That was evident this weekend, when a lightning strike on a couple of Colorado hikers resulted in a high-altitude rescue from some of the states most experienced first responders. The rescue began Thursday evening, June 12, when Colorados Alpine Rescue Team was...

About a year removed from the 2024 Olympics, elite running will return to Paris on June 26 in the form of Breaking 4, Kenyan runner Faith Kipyegons attempt to set the worlds first womens sub-4-minute mile. The attempt doesn’t come from nowhere. A February 2025 study in the Journal of Applied Physiology predicted a women’s sub-4 mile within the next...
8 Great-Looking (and Smooth-Riding) Women’s Running Shoes for Travel
Runners who travel know a packing trick: Instead of cramming our bulky running shoes in our luggage, we wear them. We wear them on planes, trains, and car rides. We wear them to tour cities, countrysides, museums, galleries, and trails. While others suffer from blisters and fatigue in their sandals, loafers, or even stylish hiking boots, we think to ourselves,...
Hidden Treasure Hikes: Where to Search for Lost Loot Across America
Finding a cache of gold out in the woods is every hikers dream —and sometimes, it comes true. In February 2025, two tourists were hiking on a hill in the Czech Republic when they stumbled upon a life-changing find. They noticed a tin can and a metal case tucked within an old manmade wall. Upon pulling them out and opening...
‘TILT’ Titanium Coating Adds Warmth Without Weight: Rab Mythic Ultra 180 Sleeping Bag Review
The sun dipped below the horizon, and I was set to sleep on top of Wetterhorn Peak at 14,021 feet. Deep in the mountains of Colorado, I was putting my sleeping bag system to a real stress test: Would I be able to stay warm enough at the equivalent elevation of Camp 3 on Denali? All signs were pointing to...

According to reports, the hiker, Samuel Vengrinovich, 44, survived the ordeal despite limited access to food and water. He also had a broken arm.
