A pair of bills that would have allowed Hawaii’s government to charge for rescues of hikers who venture onto closed trails has died in the state legislature. Senate Bill 2543 and House Bill 2174 were the latest in a series of proposals that sought to hold scofflaw adventurers financially responsible for their own rescues. The text of the House version...

Meet the Woman Teaching Yoga to Truck Drivers
The idea came to Hope Zvara in 2017 at a professional mixer held in her town in Wisconsin. “There was a guy and we were talking about different applications for yoga,” says Zvara, a yoga teacher. “He asked, ‘Do you have anything truck drivers could do in the cab of the truck?’” Inspiration for a business—and the cheeky name for...
The Best Sandals of 2024
Sandals are the chameleons of the footwear world. Some look like flip-flops, others like sneakers. Either way, on warm days, they let your feet breathe. How a Skin Cancer Diagnosis Changed My Relationship with the Outdoors
The day my life changed, I sat on crinkly paper in a blue hospital gown. A surgeon had cut wide incisions to remove skin cancer—melanoma—in four places on my back and neck. I had 34 stitches taken out, and the scars were the length of a hand, but there was good news. I was healing. As far as the surgeon...
