The ‘World’s Toughest Row’ Meets the Wildest Story in Rowing
When a pair of best friends in the U.K. decided to row across the Atlantic Ocean, its safe to say that expectations were low. For Charlotte Harris and Jessica Oliver, the idea of joining this grueling, 3,000-mile race across the worlds second-largest ocean just sounded like a fun challenge. Harris and Oliver had no rowing experience, unlike many of the...
Where to Buy Used Gear (The Best Sites to Shop & Save)
Cost and access are the two most significant barriers to entry into the outdoors. Maybe you live in a small town that doesnt have a gear shop or any resources on where to buy a climbing harness. Perhaps you work a minimum-wage job but still want to get outside. Heck, maybe your kids are growing fast, and kids apparel is...
The Teton Pass Collapse Photos are Truly Terrifying
What started with a small crack in the road last Thursday developed into a full-blown disaster. A large section of Wyoming Highway 22—better known as the Teton Pass—collapsed on Friday, June 7, following a series of mudslides that culminated in what officials are calling a “catastrophic failure.” In the wake of the collapse, Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon issued a statewide...
Tough Time: Hamilton Field Khaki Expedition Watch Review
When the Desert Dogs Offroad Adventures guide handed me the neck gaiter and told me Id need it for the dust, I knew things were about to get real. I was not surprised, but when you roll out to the Arizona desert to drive side-by-sides, you dont usually have a $950 watch strapped on as your test gear. Then again,...

This Is the Best Way to Start an Adventure Story
You don’t have much time to grab people’s attention nowadays. This is one of the things I emphasize in my annual writing workshops, before we read through a handful of first sentences that do just that—grab our attention, make us sit up, engage, and dive into the rest of the story. One of them, which I have memorized: “We are...

Reasons to Love Running in Chicago
“Chicago is one of the best places in the world from May through October, with all its festivals and events,” says Dave Zimmer, “and the running scene is vibrant year-round.” The Chicago-area native should know. Zimmer and his wife, Lisa, spent the last 28 years opening Fleet Feet stores across the city. And though he admits, “you have to be...
First Look: XTRATUF Riptide Sandals
It’s rare to find a shoe that’s truly amphibious. Most sandals lack adequate protection for terrestrial use, while sneakers tend to skimp on ventilation and drainage. In the footwear world, land and water sit at either end of a broad spectrum. Some people say the gap can’t be bridged. Those people just haven’t met XTRATUF’s Riptide Sandals yet. If anyone...

Rescue in Mazama After Eight Climbers Get Stranded in Snow
A recent story about a search-and-rescue mission in Washington State highlights an important lesson for rock climbers. When attempting your first multi-pitch route on a big wall of rock, its best to keep your climbing party small. According to the Methow Valley News, on Tuesday, May 21, a group of eight climbers from Illinois and Indiana attempted to ascend a...
