The Benefits (and Drawbacks) of Adult Beginner-ness, With Mirna Valerio
Everyone knows it’s important to try new things, but combating that internal voice, which begs us to stay within our comfort zone ain’t easy—even for a professional tryer of new things like Mirna Valerio. Known on the internet as The Mirnavator, Mirna knows what she’s talking about. She took up running in her late 30s, then road marathons, then trail...
Meet the Electric Minivan Designed to Spark Joy
Upon first sight, my younger daughter hugged the yellow Volkswagen ID. Buzz. Arms draped across its cheerful face, she said, “Can we keep it?” A reasonable question for a car that looks like it time-traveled from Woodstock to Haight-Ashbury via Pixar Studios. The ID. Buzz is Volkswagen’s reinterpretation of its microbus—a car so entrenched in American counterculture that you would...
‘Unforgiving Hours’ Captures Gritty History of Endurance Sports
Is competing in endurance sports a terrible idea? Thats the (somewhat rhetorical) question posed in a new collection of stories examining the painful journeys of endurance athletes trying to achieve goals unimaginable to the casual observer. The book offers many fascinating tales, like a 70-year-old competing in an ultramarathon, a sailing trip from Washington State to Alaska, or attempting six...
HUK Pro Series Review: Badass Bibs & Jacket for Foul Weather Fishing (and More)
Bad weather doesn’t stop the work. It doesn’t stop the fish from biting either. Whether you’re stringing lines in the field after a long winter or casting into icy Montana rivers before the runoff hits, the cold doesn’t care. Neither does the rain, the wind, or the occasional frozen mix that pelts your face sideways. That’s where the HUK Pro...
Bouncing Back From Heart Attacks, With Chef and Angler Ranga Perera
In and around his home of Bozeman, Montana, Ranga Perera is highly sought after as a fly fishing pal and even more highly sought after as a personal chef. There’s nothing unusual about that combination, until you learn that his family came to the States in 1991 from Sri Lanka after a happy childhood was disrupted by a violent civil...
Taking the Battle of the Sexes Outside, With Katie Burrell
You probably know Katie Burrell from Instagram, where she’s built a sizeable following by skewering outdoor stereotypes and having World Cup race ski-sharp takes on how relationships live and die on trails of all sorts. But she’s also a seasoned standup comedian who wrote and starred in 2023’s homage to 80s ski comedies, “Weak Layers,” all of which is why...
How to Hear the Minnesota Wilderness in a Guitar Chord, With Dave Simonett
Minnesota is not always top of mind when it comes to outdoor adventure, but it should be. Just ask lifelong “Land of 10,000 Lakes” local Dave Simonett, lead singer of Trampled By Turtles. Dave grew up in Mankato and spent his youth exploring its rolling woods. And when he formed Trampled in Duluth in 2003, something surprising happened. His love...
Painting Living Colors with Bryn Merrell
Yellowstone National Park’s paint palette is a vibrant collection of hues: deep purple and fiery red wildflowers, warm gold grasses, cool green sagebrush, and polychromatic geysers. It has inspired artists like Tahoe City–based painter Bryn Merrell and many others throughout history, including Yellowstone Bourbon, to pay homage to the park’s natural wonders. ...
Do Huberman’s Wind Down Glasses Actually Work? We Asked Experts.
Elite athletes have a remarkable ability to focus on what they can control and let go of what they can’t. They are process obsessives, honing in on the manifold factors—like diet, exercise, and recovery—that can make the difference between being first and being a footnote. Nutrition, weight lifting, and mental performance have all taken turns revolutionizing training, yet aside from...
Worthy Watches for Every Deserving Dad
Consider gifting Dad a watch for Father’s Day—a real banger he won’t just pretend to love. Choosing a timeless gift will nail the right sentiment, but picking the perfect timepiece out of a few (gazillion) options can present a quandary. That’s where Citizen comes in. “A watch isn’t just a watch,” says pilot and proud father Jeff Shapiro, who relies...
How to See Manhattanhenge (and 9 Other Urban Solar Alignments) in 2025
On four nights each year, sky-watchers flock to the streets of Midtown Manhattan to experience one of the nations best-known urban astronomical events: Manhattanhenge. During this phenomenon—named in honor of England’s famous Stonehenge—the sunset aligns perfectly with the city’s east-west grid, sending a blaze of sunlight down the streets and casting the city in a dramatic glow. The first Manhattanhenge...
