Pure Function, No Flash, Budget Price: REI Co-op Trailmade Pants Review
Many years ago, during a high-angle rescue course, I was introduced to the KISS principle: Keep It Simple, Stupid. The idea is that systems tend to function best when they’re kept simple rather than made unnecessarily complex. It’s a design philosophy rooted in practicality, and it applies surprisingly well to gear. The REI Co-op Trailmade Pants ($70) are a great...
Mad Genius: Funky but Functional ‘Kansept Dako’ Review
While design has always been important, in an age of virtually perfect machining and do-everything steels, design is the single most important part of knives, and all consumer products in general. The Dako, an Eddy Martinez design produced by Kansept Knives, is superb, with very solid fundamentals. It marks his first collab with a company, though he does sell his...

Vaunted Folding Bike Takes On Gravel: Brompton G Line Review
I’ve spent a lot of time over the years lugging my bikes up flights of stairs, shifting around elevators to give confused colleagues more space, or struggling to find a place in a building to park them where I wouldn’t have to worry about theft or damage. So if you’re anything like me, you’ve looked at Brompton folding commuter bikes...
Wraparound Sport Shades Cinch Tight: Ombraz ‘Refugio’ Sunglasses Review
My paddleboard was deflating, and the waves were getting bigger. As I navigated the whitewater of the Roaring Fork River, my feet wobbled and bounced on the unstable surface. I turned a corner, my eyes growing wide as the next swell came into view. I felt my board being pulled into it, turning sideways, and I knew I was going...
Dyneema Unveils Lighter, Stronger Woven Composite & First Hyperlite Pack to Use It
Dyneema is one of the most trusted and technical materials used in outdoor gear today. It is 15 times stronger than steel, light enough to float on water, and extremely resistant to tearing. Particularly among the ultralight crowd, this ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fabric has been a favorite in lightweight tents and backpacks since the 90s. Now, this pinnacle of ultralight...
