A Man, a Van, and 700 Running Shoes
It’s only 10 A.M., and Aaron Olbur is already breaking a sweat. Partly to blame is the San Diego sun, which even in December shines hot and hard on the asphalt parking lot. The other reason is Olbur’s hustle. With the help of his team of four, the 39-year-old hauls out big metal rolling racks containing 700 boxes of running...
It’s Time to Give Up on the Longevity Experiment
Last fall, tech entrepreneur and multi-millionaire Bryan Johnson spent two hours having all the plasma in his body removed. There was nothing wrong with his plasma; he simply hoped that replacing it would help him achieve eternal youth.  So, despite very limited scientific evidence, Johnson swapped it all for a protein-based fluid called albumin. It’s not the first time Johnson’s pursuit...
Lindsey Vonn’s Comeback to Ski Racing, Explained
When Lindsey Vonn announced her return to the U.S. Ski Team this past November, alpine racing fans were stunned. In 2024 Vonn turned 40 and also underwent a partial knee replacement. There is no precedent for a downhill ski racer to return to the World Cup circuit at that age, with an artificial joint. A comeback like Vonns is by and...
Toyo Launches Hybrid Tire, But Not the Electric Kind
The latest off-road tire from Toyo for trucks and SUVs is looking to fill a gap. The rubber company calls the Open Country R/T Pro a hybrid between the rugged terrain R/T Trail and the beloved Open Country M/T mud-terrain tire. The purpose of the R/T Pro is to deliver a tire thats more off-road capable than the standard R/T...
How My Dog Saved My Husband After a Ski Accident
My husband, Dave, went skiing down a forested slope behind our cabin near Collingwood, Ontario. It was a rare perfect day when he set out with our dog, Phoebe. The deep powder lured them both. Phoebe loves to ski. She’s a golden retriever, and a homebody, with traits bred into her for domestic life. Her namesake is a character in Friends, and...
Partners in the Outdoors: Rock Climbing
Andrew King excels at a number of outdoor pursuits, from surfing big waves to climbing exposed peaks. But it wasn’t until after meeting Dominique Barry—a fellow surfer, accomplished rock climber, and runner-up in Max’s inaugural season of the reality competition The Climb—that his skill and love for sport climbing grew to new heights. “We’ve come so far working together,” says King, who’s originally...
Should Female Athletes Track Their Periods? Here’s What the Science Says.
When Laura Philipp won the 2024 Ironman World Championship, one of the first things she talked about in her post-race speech was period tracking. “For this race, a lot of things were actually coming together,” she said in her finish-line interview after the win. “So for example, I was in the first half of my menstrual cycle, and I always...
I Had a Heart Attack While Running. This Is What It Felt Like.
My favored route to the top of Mount Sanitas, in Boulder, Colorado, gains some 1,200 feet in just over a mile. It starts on the aptly named Goat Trail and then climbs the East Ridge Trail to the 6,800-foot summit. There are much better trails for running in Boulder—less rocky, less steep—but I prefer this route up Sanitas because it...

The Great Playlist Debate: Music or No Music in Yoga Class?
Yoga classes these days are as diverse as the personalities drawn to them. And in recent years, one of the most polarizing topics among teachers and students everywhere is the use of music in yoga. Should classes boast banging soundtracks or should the room be as silent as a temple? Spoiler: There is no universally right answer. Whether you’re a...
Trans-European Kayak Expedition: Duo Paddles, Portages From Ireland to Istanbul
If there’s one attitude that’s nearly universal among adventure athletes, it’s a pathological commitment to optimism. Irishmen Johnny Coyne and Liam Cotter possess this quality in spades. In the last 5 months, theyve camped in freezing cold temperatures beneath the Cliffs of Dover, hauled loaded kayaks uphill for 100 miles through Germanys Black Forest, and when they knocked a hole...
