Tough, Versatile Swimming Safety: NRS Canine Flotation Device Review
It’s a rare sunny day in the Pacific Northwest, perfect for a long dog walk. Suddenly, Leo, my new husky-malamute mix, takes off at a full sprint. His leash slips taut in my hand as he darts straight toward the Columbia River. Before I can react, the bungee leash snaps with a sharp twang. I stumble forward, struggling to keep...
Great Binoculars, Value Price: Nocs Provision Pro Issue 8×42 Review
What do a bagel with cream cheese and a pair of binoculars have in common? Usually, not much. But living out in the boonies near a bird sanctuary, I often eat breakfast (a bagel and cream cheese) while scanning the land to see what our birds are doing. Since last fall, my glass of choice has been the Nocs Provision...

As automatic knives proliferate in the outdoor landscape, more of us find benefits in using them when we head outdoors. An automatic knife offers a sure thing — it will open the same way every time. That peace of mind comes in handy when you find yourself needing a knife at the ready. Since its inception in 2006, Zero Tolerance...

Danner claims its Breathable Hikers line beats the heat wherever the trail might lead. At the forefront of this line stands the N45 Mens Timberwolf and N45 Womens Ghost, which are among the first hiking shoes sporting recraftable soles. If Danners newest shoes deliver on the brands promises, this could be a big step for comfort and sustainability. (Photo/Danner)...
What’s the Best Underwear for Backpacking?
When I bought my first pair of Merino wool underwear—a pair of Ibex briefs—from a Vermont gear shop in 2017, it was a game changer. I dubbed them my “adventure undies,” since they were the first pair I’d reach for when packing for every type of outing. On long hikes, multiweek canoe camping trips, and snowy mountain excursions, they beat...
Lindsay Vonn Proves ‘Everyone Wrong,’ Finishes Second in World Cup Super-G
The 2025 FIS World Cup Womens super-G races finished March 23 in Sun Valley, Idaho. Swiss skier Lara Gut-Behrami, 33, finished in first place. But her win was almost overshadowed by Lindsay Vonns triumphant return to the racecourse after a 5-year hiatus. Vonn, 40, took second place in the womens super-G event, finishing 1.29 seconds behind Gut-Behrami and making the...
‘Brutal’ Ultrarunning Event Ends With No Finishers This Year
One of runnings toughest events just ended — without anyone earning the right to stand on a podium. The 2025 Barkley Marathons concluded this week with no finishers of its 100+ mile course. There was just one completion of the Fun Run by U.S. athlete John Kelly. Going back a year, the2024 Barkley Marathonssaw a record number of finishers — five in...
Tyler Andrews to Attempt Everest Speed Record
American ultrarunner Tyler Andrews has set a bold goal for 2025: ascend Mount Everest without the use of supplemental oxygen faster than anyone in history. The Runner’s Complete Guide to Electrolytes
There are a dizzying array of drinks and powders on the market that promise to keep you hydrated and boost energy levels during your runs. But you need more than just water and sugary calories for optimal performance. Every bead of sweat that drips from your face contains a mixture of electrolytes—in layman’s terms, “positively or negatively charged ions that...

Safari cars have been all the rage in the past few years, with Porsche 911 leading that charge for decades. Now fully mainstream, with the 911 Dakar and Lamborgini Sterrato sold directly from the factory, Safari cars are only growing in popularity. These sports cars with ground clearance, suspension travel, all-terrain tires, and skid plates make for a good time...
It’s Been a Turbulent Period for the Outdoor Industry. Here’s Why.
John Murtiashaw could not catch a break. In the fall of 2023, Murtiashaw, 38, was working as the sales manager for Appalachian Gear Company (ACG), an apparel brand based in Kings Mountain, North Carolina. Murtiashaw, an eight-year veteran in the outdoor industry, loved the job and his coworkers. There was some serious buzz around the product, and he felt like...
