13 Years of Abuse & Still Going Strong: The North Face Base Camp Duffel M Review
Years ago, when I was in college, I worked at The North Face (TNF) store in Boulder, Colo. As employees, we had a 50% discount on gear, so naturally, every payday, I would give my entire paycheck back to the company, buying rain jackets, tents, backpacks, and sleeping bags that would last me for years to come. One of the...
Patio-Sized Vestibule With Stand-Up Ceiling Height: Big Agnes Bunk House Review
Why not make your car camping trip luxurious? For a backpacker like me, squeezing into a small space was just part of the deal when it came to camping. But growing your family can also mean growing your expectations for what adventure looks like. Spreading out and taking space is necessary for us these days, and the Big Agnes Bunk...

GOREWEAR Is Closing Its Doors After 40 Years
The original version of this story was published on BikeRumor. A storied cycling and running brand is apparently closing down after 4 decades. This week, retailers received a letter from GOREWEARs parent company announcing its intention to shut down the brand. In the letter, GOREWEAR claims that economic hardships are the reason for the closure, despite “careful consideration and in-depth...
Small Enough for Your Keys, Tough Enough for Your Day: Victorinox Mini Champ Review
Multitools always make their presence known in my pocket, reminding me that they are in there. While something like the mid-sized Leatherman Skeletool CX doesn’t take up too much real estate, I am constantly aware of it. That’s fine when I’m working around the yard, but when I’m walking around the city, I want something that completely disappears in my...
Stay Warm and Active in the Latest Winter Gear From Helly Hansen
Just as hiking differs from skiing and snowboarding, so too does the performance required from specialized winter jackets and pants. No matter how you like to charge in the winter, Helly Hansen designs winter shells and active insulation pieces to meet your needs. These selections from the current winter lineup include techy shells to keep you comfortable on resort slopes,...
GORE-TEX Invisible Fit: Not Your Grandparents’ Waterproof Shoes
Waterproof footwear has been around since the mid-19th century. Breathable, lightweight, waterproof footwear? Well, that’s another story. When GORE-TEX Brand first entered the boot scene in the 1980s, the brand’s waterproof technology was a massive leap forward from the wellies and gumboots of the day. Finally, boots made with GORE-TEX Technology offered a breathable option for keeping feet dry outdoors....
Titanium Gravel Bikes, Recycled Wool Jackets, Topo Designs Watches, and More Emerging Gear
Collaborations are a tried-and-true method for outdoor brands to build hype, and this week has plenty of tag teams for smart new products. Topo Designs worked with VAER and Watch and Wound for a chic timepiece, while cycling brand Velocio teamed up with Rux for a do-it-all gear bag. Sorel and British luxury brand Barbour released boots that look fit...
VERO X-Realtree Tide Tracker Review: Time and Tide With Affordable Elegance
True confession. I’m a mainlander living in a mountain state, and I’m reviewing a tide tracking watch. But I’m also an Oregonian expat who makes a yearly pilgrimage home, introducing the coast of my youth to my own child. Brackish water pumps deep in the veins. Being an inlander unplugs you from coastal time. It’s a gap of intuition, a...
Car Camping Optimized: Pacific Adventure Works Hideway Sleep Platform Review
The two things you need to know about me are that I generally like to hike and camp alone and that I like to hit the trailhead before sunrise. To catch those early morning adventures over the years, I’ve had to sleep in my vehicle, and it’s never been optimal. To date, I can confirm that it is uncomfortable to...
Trump Appoints New BLM Head as Public Lands Agency Changes Course
On Wednesday, President Donald Trump nominated former New Mexico Rep. Steve Pearce to lead the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The nomination has added fuel to the nation’s long-running fight over how public lands should be managed. The BLM oversees 245 million acres of surface land and nearly three times that in mineral rights, making its director one of the...
