You can also post to social media or even communicate inReach-to-inReach in the field. In case of an at-risk situation, you can also use inReach to trigger an SOS to the 24/7 monitoring center, text back and forth about the nature of your emergency, and receive confirmation when help is on the way.

No Cell Tower? No Phone Service? No Problem.

inReach Explorer+ gives you all the tools to stay totally connected. You don’t have to worry about being within range of a cell tower — or encountering spotty coverage in fringe zones or blackout areas. Your inReach communicator offers two-way messaging via the global Iridium satellite network.

  Track and Share Your Whereabouts

Turn on the tracking function of your inReach Explorer+ communicator, and let family and friends follow your progress on their computers or mobile devices, using the web-based MapShare™ portal. The inReach device will send waypoints at preselected time intervals, so followers can track your whereabouts online. You can also invite your crew back home to use MapShare to ping your inReach unit and see your GPS location, track your movements and exchange messages during your trip. You can even embed your MapShare page on a blog, website or social media.

  Pair with Your Mobile Device

For even more capability and convenience, the free Earthmate® app syncs your inReach handheld via Bluetooth® with yourcompatible Apple® or Android™ device¹ so you can access unlimited maps, aerial imagery and U.S. NOAA charts. Plus, Earthmate allows you to conveniently use all of the inReach features on your paired mobile device. For easier messaging, you can also access your phone’s contact list from the Earthmate app to connect with fewer keystrokes.

  Get Weather Wherever

The optional inReach weather forecast service provides detailed updates directly to your inReach device, compatible smartphone or tablet paired with the Earthmate app, so you’ll know what conditions to expect en route. Basic and premium weather packages are offered. And you can request weather forecasts for your current location or any other waypoint or destination on your itinerary.

Who Will Answer Your SOS? GEOS Will.

GEOS is the world leader in emergency response solutions and monitoring. They’ve supported rescues in more than 140 countries, saving many lives in the process. And they’re standing by 24/7/365 to respond to your SOS, track your device and notify the proper contacts and emergency responders in your area. Then, while help is on the way, GEOS will continue to text back and forth with you, providing updates and critical information until your situation is resolved.

Unlimited Cloud Storage and Trip Planning are Included

Every inReach device comes with free access to a cloud-powered Garmin Explore website to plan your trips with routes and waypoints, create preset messages and quick texts, sync and manage your device settings, update your firmware, download additional TOPO maps, link your social media accounts, store all your location tracking data and much more.

  Built for the Rugged Backcountry

Tough, durable, impact resistant and water-rated to IPX7, the inReach Explorer+ handheld is built to keep you up and running — no matter what the elements throw at you. An internal, rechargeable lithium battery comes standard on both units so you can count on long battery life in every mode of operation (up to 100 hours at 10-minute tracking mode (default); up to 75 hours at 10-minute tracking with 1-second logging; up to 30 days at the 30-minute interval power save mode; and up to 3 years when powered off). Recharge via the standard microUSB power cable or optional in-vehicle 12 V charger (sold separately).

  Additional Aviation Services

Your inReach Explorer+ is also a supported device for the Lockheed Martin Flight Services (LMFS) Adverse Condition Alerting Service (ACAS), Surveillance-Enhanced Search and Rescue (SE-SAR) and Enhanced Special Reporting Services (eSRS). If you register for ACAS information, alerts provided via LMFS prompt you to call for an abbreviated briefing to address any specific adverse condition situation that might affect your flight-planned routing. Likewise, automatic monitoring provided by the SE-SAR service enables the system to identify potential flight emergency situations and/or signals to promptly initiate search and rescue procedures for your aircraft.

CAKE reportedly faced financial hardships before filing for bankruptcy on February 1, 2024. The Swedish brand cited socioeconomic conditions and the lack of venture capital for companies in later stages of development. But today, CAKE quietly announced new ownership and the formation of a small team dedicated to moving the brand forward. View this post on Instagram A post shared...
An Ode to My Overalls
For six months last year, once a week between May and October, I put on a pair of overalls and played farm girl as a volunteer on a goat dairy near my home in Boulder, Colorado. I’ll soon start shifts for this summer. The experience has taught me a lot: That everything on a farm has a purpose. That nothing...
Revamped Iconic Frames and Gold Glass Greatness: Costa Grand Catalina Review
Sporting some killer new options for both frame styles and lens technology, we don’t know whether to be more excited about Costa’s new gold-mirrored lens or revamped Grand Catalina frames. Performance and style-driven, both of these deadly new offerings from Costa are excellent on their own and even better when paired together. Costa has been busy. Just when I thought...
How Sepp Kuss Became Pro Cycling’s Chillest Champion
Sepp Kuss appears at the door wearing a pair of fuzzy slippers and a warm grin. “Did you find the place OK?” he asks, leading me inside. “How was your drive down?” The smell of freshly brewed coffee fills the hallway as we walk past paintings of wooded mountains and snowy landscapes. It’s as if we’ve entered a ski chalet...
Recycled Textiles, Not Bottles: Jack Wolfskin Highest Peak 3L Review
Plenty of brands make outdoor products out of recycled plastic. Patagonia has the Stormshadow Parka. The North Face has its ThermoBall Eco Jackets. Even Goodyear makes its Sustainable Tires from sustainable materials. However, the Highest Peak 3L rain jacket from Jack Wolfskin is one of the first outerwear garments made out of broken-down and recycled textiles. What’s more, you can...
Your Bike Was Stolen. Now What?
It was only a matter of time. After all, my husband and I live in Boulder County, Colorado, one of the bike meccas of the U.S. where the joke is that the bike on the back of the car is often worth more than the car itself—and thieves know it. Besides being a hub for mountain-, gravel-, and road biking, Boulder...
Pushing the Limits of Open-Toed Shoes: Bedrock Cairn Evo C Sandals Review
After wrapping up a weekend of guiding rock climbing in Joshua Tree this spring, my coworker and I had some personal time to explore the National Park. We decided to try to find a little-known cave system called the Mojave Wunderground. The hike to the Wunderground is almost entirely off-trail; we scrambled over boulders, trudged through wet sand, and smeared...
This Is the Most Travel-Friendly Pro Camera We’ve Tested
When asked which camera takes the best photos, professional photographers like to quip that “the best camera is the one you have with you.” It’s a tongue-in-cheek way of saying that you should never worry too much about your gear. Use whatever you have, then do the work to find, frame, and capture a high-quality photo. The photographer matters more...
Big Mountain Descent and Biking Begins
Ultimate Mountain Athlete, presented by the 2024 Toyota Tacoma, returns to the wind-whipped summit of Red Mountain 3, where athletes transition to the Big Mountain Descent. This timed and judged individual run puts points on the line as the athletes—with legs and lungs burning—navigate high-speed lines down nearly 2,000 feet of steep, cliff-lined terrain. Next, the competition moves to lower...

Driving Toward a Better Future
Some vehicles are so popular they have their own online forums. Others even have IRL followings. But the Defender community takes fandom to a new level, gathering for an annual festival and celebrating the Defender Service Awards presented by CHASE, which support mission-driven nonprofits with cash and a customized Defender 130. Applications for the 2024 Defender Service Awards will be accepted from June...
