Accustomed to hunting on land where his grandfather taught him how to move through the woods, Jack Summerfield had his eyes set on a new property in Southeast Virginia this year. While he doesnt have as much time as hed like to hunt, he still enjoys bow hunting as a way to connect with nature and share the tradition passed down to him.
In preparation for this hunting season, Summerfield walked the land to get a feel for how deer might move across it and where he could position himself on actual hunts. To make the most of his time in the field, he set up Moultrie Edge 3 trail cameras to inform and help plan his hunt.
This year, Virginia had a long summer that kept deer out of fields and seeking refuge from sun exposure. Summerfield and his hunting friends shared field notes from their cameras and maps of where they had placed them. They noticed the lack of typical deer behavior in bean fields and decided to move their trail cameras to monitor oak flats and reedy bottoms. There, the cameras immediately picked up the traffic of does and young bucks.

Those trail camera check-ins also keep him connected to that patch of land and his head in the game.
When he could get to the property and walk the woods, he did so with intent. By opening day, he was there to shoot one particular buck, with little interest in a backup plan.
Im much more confident knowing that I have a target buck in this one area and that having five plan Bs is not really necessary, Summerfield explains. If anything else, I get to climb a tree and sit in the woods.
