The Ultimate, Compact Tool for Clearing Deadfall on Your Local Trails
It was a couple years ago, probably eightish miles up the Stuart Peak trail near my home in Missoula, Montana, when I first started thinking about it. A small tree had fallen perpendicular across the trail, no more than four inches in diameter. I had to slow my already-not-that-fast uphill trot to almost a complete stop to step over the...
    Meindl Alpine 1.5 Light Hiker: A Do-It-All Early-Season Boot
The weather during the early hunting season in Minnesota mostly consists of summer temps with a random cold and rainy day mixed in. It’s hot, and it usually doesn’t feel like hunting season at all. I also spend as much time outside during the summer as I can, hiking and camping leading up to hunting season. Naturally, finding footwear that...
The 13 Best Islands in the World for Outdoor Adventure

Enter the concept of National Park...

I’ve Been Traveling Solo for Decades. Here Are My Pro Tips and Favorite Countries to Visit.
In traveling, I’ve always chosen to go it alone rather than not go at all. Over the years, friends have called me fearless. Don’t you get scared? they ask. Very rarely. Lonely? Honestly, never, even before the days of social media. And isn’t it more expensive to travel by yourself than with others? Traditionally, yes. Solo travelers often got slapped...
‘Life-Changing’ Carving Skis: DPS Designs First On-Piste Ski With Ted Ligety
DPS has carved a name for itself by selling high-end pow surf, touring, all-mountain, and freeride skis. Its the largest domestic ski producer in the U.S., yet its never designed a ski specifically for on-piste conditions. Next-to-Skin Comfort in the Cold: The Best Women’s Long-Sleeve Running Shirts
Long-sleeve running shirts are underrated. Finding a good one—soft, wicking, breathable, comfortable—can be the difference between looking forward to a winter run and dreading it. The best kinds of long-sleeve shirts can be worn on their own in mild temps and shoulder seasons, and they serve as the final line of defense against bitter cold when worn underneath protective layers....

Researchers: Hold Your Breath to Get an Effect “Similar to Blood Doping”
If you could patent and sell the idea of holding your breath before exercise to boost performance, it would be a bestseller. Not because it works, necessarily—the jury is still out on that. But because the logic is so good, the physiology is so fascinating, and the technique is so simple. Instead, without a commercial imperative behind it, the idea...
