Skull ‘Rooftop Camper’ Concepts: Introducing the Mammoth Overland SKL
Jun 7, 2025 8:52 AM

A new take on a rooftop tent, the Mammoth Overland SKL (skull) concept is being called a rooftop camper. Thats because it has no tent material, and it has an insulated shell and a full-onboard power system.

“While our HV, ELE, TL, and WLY trailers have been wildly successful, we realized that not everyone has room to store an off-road trailer at their home. We wondered, ‘what if a trailer and rooftop tent had a baby?’ SKL was born,” said Mammoth Overland President Scott Taylor.

“SKL takes the features that our customers love most about our trailers and moves them to the roof of their rig. What’s more, SKL is essentially a portable power station that you can sleep in.”

The SKL is constructed entirely of aluminum, with a painted finish. It utilizes no soft materials in its structure, which separates it from traditional rooftop tents. It has origami-style fold-out solid walls.

(Photo/Mammoth Overland) The camper has an R5 insulation rating, which should be great for four-season camping. SKL is 89 inches long, 59 inches wide, and 18 inches tall. It offers a king-size mattress length, while offering an interior width between a queen and a full-size bed.

Dual interior LED light strips and a roof-mounted three-speed electric fan are included and powered by the onboard battery pack.

On both sides of the roof of the SKL are auxiliary flood lights, which are perfect for trail and campsite illumination.

(Photo/Mammoth Overland) Advertised Features While we dont know a lot of details about the SKL yet, we do know about a few cool features being shown on this concept.

The roof rack atop the SKL has a capacity of 500 pounds. That means it can support e-bikes, kayaks, etc.

The roof also has porthole windows, which provide some ambient light. Side panels in the walls hinge outward when you want max airflow and light in the camper.

Later this year, the company does plan to show a production unit. A company rep did tell me that it could see significant changes before going to production.

The Mammoth Overland SKL concept will make its public debut at Overland Expo West in Flagstaff, Ariz., this weekend, May 16-18, 2025.
